Language opens doors to a new culture! Learn while you study abroad

One of the major advantages of going to study abroad in a new country is the opportunity one gets to learn about a new culture and meeting people from different ethnicities. Apart from the higher quality education that one hopes to obtain from a study abroad stint, there are other externalities that one can gain, such as the learning of a new language.

Learning a new language while you start overseas education, can not only open doors to the riches of a new culture but will also look great on your resume. Students who can show their proficiency in speaking more than one language are given extra preference when it comes to job opportunities in this globalized world. Moreover learning a language like French, while you study abroad can help you in scoring points additional points for your CRS score should you decide on immigration to Canada in the future. As is learning German, should you opt to move to Germany or Switzerland? Additionally learning a second language can also benefit you personally as it has been proven to boost brain development, concentration and productivity. Now that we have convinced you on the benefits and importance of learning a new language. We provide you with some tips on acquiring proficiency in a new language. It is not easy by any means and will take quite a bit of hard work and perseverance on your part but it definitely can be done.

Don’t hesitate to speak in the new language

Many students who are learning a new language while they study abroad are extremely shy about trying out their newly acquired language skills on the locals. They fear that they will be laughed at for their mistakes or for their different accent. However many experts advise that it is important to start talking a new language from the very beginning itself. Making mistakes is a part of the learning process as you learn to grapple with the difficult words and unique accent of the new tongue. Also as a student in a foreign university you will likely be there for a limited amount of time, therefore it’s important to plunge right in and start speaking the new language so that you can make the most of your study abroad time.

Engage in light activity while you learn

It has been proven by a new study that engaging in light activity such as walking or cycling while you learn a new language can help your brain retain what it has learned better. You can cycle around your university campus while listening to instructional tapes on your iPod or go on the elliptical in your university gym while listening to a podcast on your phone. Many audiobooks and podcasts are available for listening on the go, which can help you exercise while you learn a new language. Exercising helps your brain to release vital neurochemicals which speed up the process of learning in your brain.

Practice wherever you get the opportunity

One of the mantras of successfully learning a new language is practicing whenever you get the opportunity. When you go to the local café to get your morning cup of Jo, don’t order in English, though the barista there can perfectly understand it. Make the effort to greet him in the local language and place your order in it too. Take the opportunity to speak in the local language while asking for directions or shopping while you study abroad.  It may seem silly and embarrassing at first but doing so will give you a more immersive experience and the confidence you require to speak effortlessly in the new language. It also help to change your social media settings to the new language and watch popular serials and movies in the language with subtitles initially and then when you gain more confidence without the help of subtitles.

Have fun while learning

Learning a new language need not be a boring endless process of conjugating verbs or memorizing difficult to pronounce phrases. You can make it more fun by joining a community of learners where you can make new friends. You can set challenges and friendly matches for your friends and yourself.  There are a number of apps that make a game out of the learning process which you can add to make it more fun for you. You can also be more adventurous and join an amateur poetry or song writing club in the new language while studying abroad.

Join a community of learners

As with everything else, there is strength in numbers when learning a new language while you study abroad. Joining a community of learners can give you the opportunity of exchanging notes and asking questions with other learners. If you are not able to join a language class for lack of time or other constraints while you study abroad, you can take your learning process online and rely on any of the many forums dedicated to the purpose.  There are many online forums as well as social media communities that are dedicated to learning a new language and you can find help with your learning process in these forums.

SAT Vs ACT, Which exam should you take for Overseas Education?

Select SAT or ACT Coaching Centre for Study Abroad Program in USA!

Many students who are planning to study abroad in USA at the undergraduate level are faced with the dilemma of whether to attempt the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) or ACT (American College Testing) for their admission process. The two tests are the primary criteria for judging the eligibility of a student for admission into undergraduate programs by many Universities and Colleges in USA. Most colleges give you the option of deciding on which test to take and accept scores from both tests, whereas a few colleges specify which test they prefer for considering the admission process to study abroad at their university. As many universities leave the choice to the student, it is important to know the difference between the two tests in order to make an informed choice.

SAT Examination Pattern for Overseas Education

The SAT which stands for Scholastic Aptitude Test, has the following sections that have to be attempted by students who plan to study abroad.

  1. Reading
  2. Writing & Language
  3. Math
  4. Essay (Optional)

ACT – Different modules for Study Abroad Program

The ACT is an acronym for American College Testing has the following sections that have to be attempted by students who aim to Study Abroad in USA.

  1. English
  2. Math
  3. Reading
  4. Science Reasoning
  5. Essay (Optional)

As it is perceived from above, both the tests are designed to evaluate the student’s readiness to study abroad by testing his knowledge in Math, reading and both have an essay option. The difference lies in the fact that while SAT additionally tests the student on his writing skills, ACT tests the student on the basis of his science reasoning.

Scoring of the Tests

The students who aim to study abroad in USA will also find that the scoring pattern for both tests is different. A student can score a maximum of 1600 with SAT exam and a maximum of 36 with the ACT. Though this may not make a difference to your admission prospects, it is well worth knowing.

Timing of the Test

The SAT lasts for 3 hours if the student attempts it without the essay section and 3 hrs. 55 min if the student chooses to complete the essay section in his quest to study abroad. Moreover as the test does not have a science section, any student who is not planning to study abroad in a science related field may choose to attempt this test.

The ACT exam evaluates the student who aims to study abroad in USA and tests him on the field of scientific reasoning in addition to the other subjects, which makes it an ideal test for those who intend to study abroad in a science related course. The exam which lasts for 2 hours 55 min without the essay can be taken in 3 hours, 40 minutes if the essay section is attempted. Moreover for those who are weak in mental Math, the ACT can be a good choice as it allows the student to use a calculator for math problems. It is important to decide before hand which test you are going to attempt and prepare accordingly so that you can do your best on the test and increase your chances of study abroad in US.

UK’s Proposed Immigration Changes To Benefit Overseas Students

The UK government is expected to change the rules for immigration in a way that makes it easier forOverseas Students to obtain work in the country, in a move that signals a major shift in the approach towards a more welcoming stance. The proposed changes include plans to allow students who pursue Overseas Education in UK to be eligible for switching to a Skilled Worker Visa as soon as they have completed their selected course rather than waiting for their degree to be awarded – were detailed in Budget documents published on 22 November.

There have also been few suggestions from certain factions sector that the Home Office is planning to take a new stance with regards to students who come to UK for Overseas Education. The home office is expected to extend a pilot scheme that eases visa rules for students who are applying forOverseas Education to Master’s Courses at the prestigious Universities of Cambridge, Bath, Oxford, and Imperial College London.

According to the “Red Book” of the budget the government will be changing  immigration rules to enable world-leading scientists who are endorsed under the Tier 1  pathway for applying for settlement after three years in UK and speed up the process for Highly Skilled Students who pursueOverseas Education in UK to apply to work in the country after they finish their degrees and reduce the bureaucratic delays in hiring international researchers by relaxing the test for labour market and allowing the UK’s research councils to sponsor researchers

Effect of proposed changes to Overseas Education Students

The proposed changes will allow Students to Apply for and obtain a Tier 2 Skilled Worker Visa as soon as they complete their course or after writing their final exam instead of having to wait until they have received their degree. The change is thought to be in response to universities feedback to the Home Office that the present rules are causing difficulties for Post Graduate Students. In another move, the change to the Exceptional Talent scheme will cut down two years from the five-year wait faced by students currently for eligibility for settlement. The legislation for changes in the rules of immigration is expected to be scheduled in the spring.

A spokesman for Universities in UK has hailed the positive changes for both staff recruitment and the improved speed for students to take up work after completion of their studies. The spokesperson hoped that in the coming months the government would further commit to a strategy for growing the number of students seeking Overseas Education in United Kingdom.

Different stances on immigration
